DINING

Upon arrival in Paris, you'll find that the word "French," although frequently used, isn't very helpful in describing cuisine. "French" means a broad scope of dishes and it doesn't prepare you for the offerings of the specialty chefs. What this means is that regional cuisine is king here in Paris. This culinary style showcases the diversity of the provinces of France, from Alsace on the German border to the Basque country at the frontier of Spain. Of course it doesn't stop there. As a world city Paris has hundreds of restaurants serving exotic international fare, reflecting the changing complexion of Paris itself and the city's increasing appreciation for food from other cultures. Your most memorable meal in Paris may turn out to be Vietnamese or West African. In addition there's numerous cafes where you can enjoy a single cup of coffee for hours on end, or dig into a delicious croque-monsieur sandwich with a side of chips. And don't forget the pastries. Paris is famous for pastries and deservedly so. From the pain au chocolat (chocolate croissant) to the madeleines to the napoleons you might get the sense that you're being hit by a wave of delicious butter, cream, fruit and jelly.
* Carré des Feuillants-This establishment is a bastion of perfection. Located between the Vendome and the Tuileries this former convent is now one of the most successful restaurants in Paris. Enjoy the interior designed to resemble a 1900s bourgeois house. Even more, enjoy the sophisticated southwestern French cuisine.
* Goumard-With its opening dating back all the way to 1872, this Parisian establishment has been one of the leading seafood restaurants for longer than anyone remembers. Much of the seafood is flown in daily from Brittany and you can tell when you try it. The very polite staff will help translate the menu for you if you're having trouble.
* Buddha Bar-It's been around for a while but this restaurant is still one of the hippest most fashionable places to eat in all of Paris. With a fantastic location near the Champ-elysees and place de la Concorde it's a fantastic place for a fantastic meal. Savor your food as your taste buds explore an allegiance between French, Asian, and Californian cuisines.
* Aquarius-In a 17th-century building whose original stonework forms part of the earthy decor, this is one of the best-known vegetarian restaurants in Le Marais. The owners serve a limited array of (strictly organic) wine, and smoking is expressly forbidden.
Family Friendly

* Chicago Pizza Pie Factory-There are no frogs' legs or snails to gross out little minds and stomachs at the Chicago Pizza Pie Factory, just the City of Light's best pizza followed by a kid-pleasing cheesecake.
* Crémerie-Restaurant Polidor-One of the most popular restaurants on the Left Bank, this reasonably priced dining room is so family-friendly it calls its food cuisine familiale. This might be the best place to introduce your child to bistro food.
