CENTRE POMPIDOU

The brainchild of former president Georges Pompidou this centre for 20th and 21st century art has a fine collection of pieces well worth the viewing. Encompassing five separate attractions the Centre Pompidou has been a point of controversy for years. Described at its founding as the "most avant-garde building in the world" it's exposed workings and bold exoskelatal design have left some begging for more and others begging for it to be torn down. Whether you love it or you hate it your sure to be fascinated. The brightly coloured, criss-crossing pipes ducts (green for water, red for heat, blue for air, yellow for electricity) are particularly mesmerizing. Popular for families is the museum's forecourt, a free "entertainment centre" featuring mimes, fire-eaters, circus performers, and sometimes musicians. Don't miss the nearby Stravinsky fountain, containing mobile sculptures by Tinguely and Saint Phalle. The Musee National d'Art Moderne has a large collection of modern and contemporary art and is the main attraction at the centre. The Centre for Industrial Design emphasizes the contributions made in the fields of architecture, visual communications, publishing, and community planning. The Atelier Brancussi Museum is a particularly enjoyable little gem. Finally the last two museums (The Public Information Library and The Institute for Research and Coordination of Music) while mainly research oriented, do occasionally hold exhibits. Check the schedule to see what's showing.
