Rodin Muesum Yet another museum in Paris MUSÉE RODIN The Thinker, The Gate of Hell, The Burghers of Calais, even if these names or even the name Rodin itself don't ring a bell you're sure to recognize these incredible pieces of sculptural art. Rodin is acclaimed today as the father of modern sculpture but in a different era his work was thought obscene. Times changed however and by 1911 the French government acquired Rodin's studio in this grey-stone mansion and turned it into a monument to his greatness. The garden is where you'll find some of his most famous pieces but don't stop there. Inside the sculpture, plaster casts, reproductions, originals, and sketches reveal the freshness and vitality of a remarkable artist. Everyone falls in love with The Kiss and the nude of Balzac is one of his most important works. The list goes on and on. Particularly worth a long stop is the generally overlooked room devoted to Rodin's mistress, Camille Claudel, a towering artist in her own right. She was his pupil, model, and lover, and created such works as Maturity, Clotho, and the recently donated The Waltz and The Gossips. |
